Warehouse Barcode Scanner Buying Guide: 1D vs 2D, Wired vs Wireless, Handheld Terminals
Short answer: choose a 1D laser scanner if you only read printed linear barcodes, a 2D imager if you also read QR, Data Matrix or codes on screens, a wireless model when operators move around, and an Android handheld terminal when the device must run your inventory app by itself. Below are the questions to answer before buying, with examples from our catalog (specs quoted from each product page).
Do I need a 1D or a 2D barcode scanner?
A 1D (linear) scanner reads traditional barcodes such as UPC, EAN, Code 128 and Code 39 — the codes printed on most retail cartons and many shipping labels. A 2D scanner also reads QR codes, Data Matrix and PDF417, and usually reads 1D codes as well. If your suppliers, carriers or your own labels use QR or Data Matrix codes (common on shipping labels, parts and phone screens), choose 2D. If you only scan printed linear barcodes, a 1D laser scanner is the lower-cost option.
- 1D, wired: 1D Laser Barcode Scanner, USB wired (ABX-0438, $39.10) — listing states 3.5 mil resolution, IP52 and drops up to 1.5 m.
- 2D, wired + Bluetooth + 2.4G: Eyoyo 2D Barcode Scanner, 3 connection modes (ABX-0410, $68.82) — reads 1D, QR and PDF417 per the listing.
Wired, Bluetooth or 2.4G wireless — which connection should I choose?
USB wired scanners plug in and work as a keyboard; they never need charging and suit fixed packing or receiving stations. Bluetooth pairs with phones, tablets and laptops without a dongle. A 2.4G dongle connection pairs only with its receiver, which makes it simple to deploy on a desktop PC. Many scanners combine all three so one model can move between stations.
- Eyoyo 2D scanner (ABX-0410, $68.82) — USB, Bluetooth and 2.4G, 450 mAh battery per the listing.
- NETUM portable 2D Bluetooth scanner (ABX-0403, $61.02) — Bluetooth, 2.4G and USB, described for express delivery and logistics.
When does a hands-free or desktop scanner make sense?
At checkout counters, pick-and-pack benches and ticket or access points, a presentation (desktop) scanner lets the operator hold the item, not the scanner. Embedded modules mount inside kiosks, gates and vending machines and trigger automatically when a code is presented.
- Desktop: 2D/1D QR desktop scanning box (ABX-0411, $39.98) — USB and RS232 options, IP42 and 1.5 m drop rating per the listing.
- Embedded: Self-induction 1D/2D/QR embedded scanner module (ABX-0442, $189.02) — designed for gate machines, ticket checking and mobile payment.
What is a wearable (ring) scanner for?
Ring scanners free both hands for lifting and picking, which is useful in order picking and parcel sorting. Check the supported symbologies on the product page before buying, and whether offline storage is available for areas with weak signal.
- Finger / ring barcode scanner (ABX-0418, $152.50) — Bluetooth + 2.4G + wired, with offline storage; the listing states transmission up to 15 m (without obstacles) and drops from 1.5 m.
When should I buy an Android handheld terminal (PDA) instead of a scanner?
A scanner only sends the code to another device. An Android mobile computer (PDA) has its own screen, battery and Wi-Fi/4G, so it can run your warehouse, inventory or delivery app directly — useful for cycle counts, receiving and proof of delivery away from a PC. Compare the Android version (app support and security updates), battery capacity and the ingress-protection (IP) rating.
- Chainway C66 Android 13 mobile computer (ABX-0409, $775.85) — 5.5″ screen, Wi-Fi 6, IP65 and 4300 mAh per the listing.
- Android handheld terminal with Honeywell scan engine (ABX-0399, $501.36) — Android 13, IP66, 4200 mAh, Wi-Fi/4G/NFC per the listing.
- Urovo i9100 Android PDA with 58 mm printer (ABX-0370, $523.75) — Android 6.0, 5600 mAh, 1D/2D camera scanning and a built-in thermal printer, for mobile receipts and POS.
What do IP ratings and drop specs mean for a warehouse?
The IP code’s first digit is dust protection and the second is water protection (for example, IP65 = dust-tight and protected against water jets). Drop height is the free-fall distance the maker tested. For loading docks, cold rooms or outdoor yards, prefer IP65 or higher; for an indoor desk, IP42–IP52 is usually enough. Always compare the figures stated on each product page.
Will a scanner work with my software?
Most USB and Bluetooth scanners use keyboard (HID) mode: the scanned code is typed into whatever field has the cursor, so they work with spreadsheets, web apps and most POS and WMS software without drivers. Embedded modules may also offer serial (RS232/TTL) output for kiosks and controllers. Android PDAs run your app on the device; ask your software vendor which Android version they support.
Can I get a quote for multiple units?
Yes. Use the Request a quote / bulk pricing form on any product page or email solutions@automationbotx.com with the model, quantity and ship-to location. Shipping within the US is free; we also ship to Latin America and the Caribbean.
